Vintage Overview

The vintage was characterised by a variable growing season, with a cool, wet spring followed by warm, dry conditions in January and rainfall during harvest. Careful vineyard management and selective picking resulted in lower yields, but exceptional fruit quality, with the whites, particularly Riesling, showing vibrant aromatics, bright natural acidity and fine structure.

Grosset, Polish Hill, Riesling 2026

Jeffrey Grosset has built an exceptional reputation over the past four decades, with Polish Hill at the heart of it. Produced from a biodynamically farmed vineyard established in 1996, the vines grow on exceptionally hard slate soils in the Clare Valley. The 2026 is intensely aromatic, with lime blossom, vibrant citrus and a distinctive chalky minerality. There is real power here, but also incredible finesse and balance.

Perhaps most impressive is its ability to age. Grosset himself suggests that the wine could comfortably develop for up to 25 years, although it is equally captivating in its youth.

“Expressive and open in its youth with sliced pear, apple blossom, white stone fruit, lime leaf, wet stones, citrus peel and slate. The palate is mid-weight and balanced with bright acidity and texture through the middle, with clinical, mouthwatering tension and minerality. Showing early drinking appeal with plenty of time ahead in bottle. An excellent release of this Aussie wine staple”

“The dab hand of one of Australia’s finest winemakers, and Riesling makers in particular, is well to the fore in this wonderful expression of the Polish Hill River sub-region. Such a beautiful, spicy, floral, lemony nose. And then a bracing, tense, minerally palate with a lovely wet slate citrus combination. Almost bounces across the pebbles across the palate. With that little pithy lemon adding an edginess to the finish. There’s a lip-smacking, refreshing acidity on the finish that completes what is a lovely wine”

“Pink grapefruit, fresh lime, aniseed, thyme and assorted herbs, with something of a violet and lavender perfume. This is very stony and strict, a little grainy grip, light but intense with lime zest and perfume on a tight quinine-laced finish of excellent length. A classic vintage for this wine. Cool but perfectly formed”

“This is a fantastic expression of Polish Hill. It's very, very minerally, almost an alpine-river kind of feel, with wet slate, some aniseed, dashes of lime rind, pleasingly bitter green apple notes, wet fern and succulent pink grapefruit and talc through the finish. The perfume is a quiet cavalcade of jasmine florals, citrus fruit and alpine herbs. So sleek, trim and superiorly long and fine boned. It's got intensity and energy to burn. And it's so very thirst-quenching and refreshing”

“Light, bright lemon yellow colour with aromas of lemon pith, verbena, nettle and dried herbs, the palate intense and firmly drying, with excellent persistence and a clean, superbly harmonious and dry finish that rolls on and on. This is a baby that has great potential and begs for time. Cellar!”
